(This post was originally published on my Tumblr blog. If you’re on Tumblr, please reblog it to let people know AdBlock Plus exists and works.)
So, Yahoo bought Tumblr and the reason they spent $1.1 billion on it was because they think they can buy our time and attention. Tumblr sold us to Yahoo using what they call “in-stream ads,” which is a way for posts from companies you don’t follow to show up on your dash; I just saw my first (and last) one of these.
Because. Fuck. That. Corporate. Shit.
Luckily, there’s a very simple way for you make sure Tumblr never shows you one of these ads ever again. Here’s how to do it:
- Download and install AdBlock Plus for your browser.
- In the AdBlock Plus Options screen, click the “Customize” tab.
- In the “Manually edit your filters” text box, copy-and-paste the following, on its own line:
- Click Save.
That’s it. Tumblr will no doubt make it harder for us to block ads in the future, so when that happens please let me know. I’ll probably put together a filter list you can subscribe to (using AdBlock Plus’s custom filter list subscription feature) unless someone beats me to the punch. Also, the more ads you block, the faster the Web pages you visit loads.
Share this with everyone you know. It’s free, effective, and saves you time (and, in cases where you pay for bandwidth, even money)!
Pro-tip: Sometimes, Tumblr shows ads in its “radar” section, that little image on the right-hand sidebar of your dash. If you want to block that, too, just add a new line in your “Manually edit your filters” text box that reads as follows:
